The next time you ride Ariel's Undersea Adventure at Disney's California Adventure you might see a strange-looking fish, peeking out from behind the seaweed, enjoying the show. What makes this fish unusual is that it has big lips, big blue eyes, and is wearing glasses. Glasses? That's right, glasses!
Well it seems our friends at Imagineering thought it would be fun to pay homage to Don Knotts, who played The Incredible Mr. Limpet, by placing him in the show. In case you didn't know, The Incredible Mr. Limpet was a 1964 live-action/animated film from Warner Brothers. Mr. Limpet was a book-keeper who wanted to become a fish. While on a visit to Coney Island, Mr. Limpet falls into the water and miraculously gets his wish - he becomes a fish!
Mr. Limpet is hard to find, because he is placed next to the back wall in the large "Under the Sea" room (or scene 5) just past Ariel.
There he is, all alone, poking his head out from behind the seaweed.
If you look carefully you will see a small peg on Mr. Limpet's back where the seaweed has a notch. We speculate that was the original mounting point for the figure. Where-ever he was originally meant to go in the show, Mr. Limpet ended up attached to a rock!
What a wonderful bit of Disney attraction trivia. Don Knotts would be proud!
